Some people are adamantly against diagnosing people with conditions such as Autism or ADHD. ![]() ![]() There is a lot of discussion and controversy regarding ‘labels’ or diagnosis in neurodiversity (and beyond – this debate also occurs regarding ethnicity/race, gender and sexuality). The diagnosis, for me, has been transformational and has made me more accepting of who I am. Since then, I have relaxed into my own skin more than I ever thought possible I allow myself to feel how I feel in that moment, I allow myself to make mistakes without berating myself, I will no longer accept being made to feel inadequate by others and most of all, I am confident and proud to be open and honest about who I truly am. The diagnosis came with a surprise diagnosis of PTSD aswell, this was something that I hadn't even contemplated, and was the catalyst to me realising that I needed to reframe my view of me.Ĭlose friends have been invaluable to support me through this and I am so grateful to them. My decision to go forward with a diagnosis of ADHD was due to a need to understand myself better, to understand why I felt that I had never really fitted in and been able to fully relax around groups of people, to try and make sense of why I had always been so hard on myself for making mistakes and overthinking everything, to understand why I could either spend hours on a task or find it impossible to even start it. When neurodiverse individuals are represented in media, the arts, and other areas, it not only provides a positive role model, but also helps to challenge negative stereotypes and stigmas associated with neurodiversity. Seeing people who share similar experiences and struggles succeed in their chosen fields can help neurodiverse youth feel empowered and hopeful about their own future. Representation of neurodiverse role models is crucial for young people who are neurodiverse. It's a great resource for educators, employers, and anyone interested in promoting greater understanding and acceptance of autism.
